The Father

While other religions speak of deity by various names, the revelation of God as Father belongs uniquely to Christianity through Jesus Christ. This revelation was first manifested at Jesus' baptism when the Spirit descended like a dove and a voice from heaven declared, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). Jesus himself taught us to pray, "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name" (Matthew 6:9), and throughout John's gospel repeatedly addresses God as Father, beginning his high priestly prayer with "Father, the hour has come. Glorify your son, that your son may glorify you" (John 17:1).

This revelation transforms our understanding from abstract deity to loving Father who desires intimate relationship with his children. As John Wesley taught, those who are "born of the Spirit" receive "the Spirit of adoption," enabling them to cry "Abba, Father" with intimate assurance.

This is not merely intellectual knowledge but experiential reality, it is the privilege of every child of God to know the Father not as distant judge, but as loving parent. Through faith in Christ, we too receive this Spirit of adoption, approaching God with the confidence of beloved children, knowing we are heard, loved, and held secure in the Father's care.
